Howdy sports fans. This update is long overdue. Stay Fly Muay Thai is poised for some big exciting changes and the chaos surrounding them has taken much of our focus in preparation. Stay tuned for updates on our new schedule and programs we are offering.
We wanted, however, to make sure that everyone out there in cyberspace heard about how well our boys did last week at the Warriors’ Cup in South Philly…
Both of our fighters, Mike Rakay and Calvin Au did amazing.
First of our boys up was big Mike Rakay, who was pitted against Ian Clarke, from another top Philadelphia camp, Rami Elite. Mike fought and beat one of Ian’s teammates in his last outing, and felt excited at the opportunity to culling the herd of his division by taking another scalp this time out. His training was focused and extensive and it showed in the ring. His poise was excellent as he seemed to see everything his opponent attempted to swing at him. Firing off thunderous leg strikes, his opponent kept Mike at bay for the beginning moments of the fight. As Mike adjusted, he found his opponent’s jaw with hard strikes, especially a clean right hook that seemed to stumble the opposing fighter. He began mixing up his angles very well and keeping his ears open and reacting to what we called for in the corner. He ended the fight with a right hook followed with a right knee, followed with a straight right hand that folded his opponent to the canvas. The referee waved the fight off, only just over a minute after the opening bell. Mike improved his Muay Thai record to a pristine 3-0 with a dominant performance that made everyone in that room know that the 205 division is in some real trouble with Mike around.
Next up was Calvin Au, who was to face a gentleman named Mickey from my old coach’s camp, Cool Hearts Muay Thai. Calvin started the fight explosively with beautiful technique. I always explain that Calvin fights with the skillful technique and poise of a much more experienced fighter. He landed clean strikes throughout the fight, dominating his very strong, very game opponent from the opening bell. Calvin was very busy and relentless in his attacks. He threw great kicks and smashed with his punches, though his opponent never would retreat. Calvin slowed in the third round, not dominating as clearly as the first two rounds, but I thought he was still the fighter in control. He won a unanimous decision and improved his record to a perfect 2-0.
Thank you to all of you who came out to support the dudes as they got in the ring. I can’t tell you how important it is to feel support from your team while you are in the ring. It means all the difference in the world.
Our boys had a great showing that night and we’re excited to see both of them step back into the ring soon.
